Oscar winner William Wyler once again does a masterful job directing Gary Cooper, Dorothy McGuire and Anthony Perkins in the screen version of Jessamyn West’s Friendly Persuasion (1956).

Dealing with a family of Quakers and their response to the outbreak of the Civil War, it is a brilliantly acted, often poignant, funny and evocative film, rich in detail, with a sumptuous score by Dimitri Tiomkin. The perfect family movie for a warm, winter’s holiday. Happy Thanksgiving!  Steve Hayes

But to ask pity of our body is like discoursing in front of an octopus, for which our words can have no more meaning than the sound of the tides, and with which we should be appalled to find ourselves condemned to live
